Decoded: The suspense about the new CS

COURTESY MIRROR JULY 22

Decoded: The suspense about the new CS

WE have heard of Gujarat IAS officers becoming the toast of the national capital. Dilli is full of our officers who are not only doing a terrific job but inspiring other officers in creativity and consistency. Everyone knows that Dilli Durbar is full of our navratnas or more gems from Gujarat. But here is something more for you. Our cordial Chief Secretary J N Singh who has retired but continues to serve on an extension is likely to get a super posting in Delhi in either home or defence ministries (more on that later). However, the story begins here. Let this column be the first to tell you that our PM and HM are both working to ensure that a super Chief Secretary fills up the position after Singh’s tenure ends in September. We can tell you that a low profile IAS officer is being considered for this post and let us be the first to tell you that this would be a reverse trend. In the sense, while so many officers are being exported to Delhi, this gentleman will be imported from Delhi. Right now, your diarist can tell you that the PM has personally shortlisted three IAS officers for the position, with our friend in Delhi topping the list. He has endeared himself to PM Modi with his outstanding work and more importantly the low profile that he consciously maintains. An officer close to PM Modi sounded us that the PM may pick this IAS for the Chief Secretary’s position because this officer is innovative and high on deliverance. Unlike many who make noise and indulge in visible fanfare, this officer believes in just letting his work speak. His expertise in urban and financial sector also gives him an edge. Moreover, he is approachable and is committed to innovate and deliver people-oriented projects. We wish him all the best for his ghar vapasi!
