TMC MP sends notice to PM for ‘defamation’
KOLKATA:WEST Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate for Diamond Harbour, Abhishek Banerjee, sent a defamation notice on Saturday to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the latter made malicious charges against him at an election rally on May 15.

Describing the PM’S remarks as “unverified, sensationalist, and patently inaccurate”, the two-page letter demanded an unconditional apology within 36 hours and threatened that if such a step was not forthcoming, “appropriate proceedings” will be initiated.

The 31-year-old chief minister’s nephew, who is widely seen as her protégé, accused Modi of making a defamatory speech at an election rally in Diamond Harbour on May 15. In his speech, Modi had lashed out at Banerjee, whom he referred to as “bhatija” (nephew).

“After the election results, the bhatija’s office will be under lock and key. I have been told that the office of the Bhatija has been built encroaching roads in keeping with the great tradition of the TMC. Hasn’t he done it this way? Illegally?” Modi had said.

“Didi, your party is amassing wealth through tolabazi (extortion),” he had added.

The legal notice to Modi read, “You threatened to lock up my client’s office after the results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections are announced. My client feels that although such claims are spectacular, your malice only depicts your growing frustration with regard to my client’s constituency. Such vile and vindictive statements are unbecoming of the post you hold and should be remedied immediately.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit president Dilip Ghosh said that the party could not care less.

“Such measures will not save him (Abhishek). Will he spend energy on serving legal notices or saving his party’s MPS and ministers from the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation)?” Ghosh said
